Introducing The Open Land Trio!
New for 2024, Ian Ethan Case's "Open Land Trio" combines the acoustic double-neck guitarist and composer's multi-layered, rhythmically intricate, and often cinematic sound with the nuance and fire of two of Boston's best improvisers. A self-titled EP will be released 8/8/2024, coinciding with the trio's first live performance in Boston. Open Land Trio - Full Bio
Ian Ethan Case's "Open Land Trio" combines the acoustic double-neck guitarist and composer's multi-layered, rhythmically intricate, often cinematic sound with the nuance and fire of two of Boston's most brilliant improvisers: drummer Tyson D. Jackson and saxophonist Jonathan Suazo.
A Candyrat recording artist, Case has quickly become recognized as "one of the most creative and engaging fingerstyle guitarists in the world" (The International Center for Creativity.) His unmistakable, one-of-a-kind playing style and compositional voice have drawn praise from icons such as John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra), bassist Lee Sklar (James Taylor), Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackermann, and fingerstyle guitar godfather Don Ross, who declared his live performance "some of the most massively inventive musicianship I've ever heard/seen." Other listeners have described his music as a cross between Michael Hedges, Steve Reich, and Pat Metheny.
He has recorded, performed, and/or shared the stage with some of the most noteworthy artists in instrumental non-classical music including Victor Wooten, Stanley Jordan, Manu Delago (Björk), Jharis Yokley (José James), GoGo Penguin, Andy McKee, and Grammy Award winners Eugene Friesen and Paul McCandless, as well as members of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. In the United States, his music has been featured on popular nationwide radio programs including NPR's "Here & Now" and PRI's "Echoes", while numerous viral videos have reached over 14 million listeners around the world.
Growing up in a rural area and with few musicians to play with, Case was forced to develop creative ways of extending his reach as a solo musician, using a combination of technology, unusual instruments, and inventive techniques in order to achieve the multi-layered ensemble music he was hearing in his head. He later studied at Berklee College of Music and gleaned further insights from music camps, clinics, and private lessons with top jazz musicians such as John Pattitucci, Antonio Sanchez, Aaron Goldberg, Mike Manieri, Adam Rogers, and master hand percussionists Giovanni Hidalgo, Jamey Haddad, Rajna Swaminathan and Glen Velez.
Since then, he has crafted and refined his unique voice and his live performance over the course of hundreds of concerts throughout the US, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, and Italy. His newly-launched Open Land Trio places his extremely individual playing style and unique compositional and orchestrational aesthetic into a more improvisational, grooving, and harmonically dynamic musical context, brought to life by some of the most talented and accomplished players of the new generation.
Drummer Tyson D. Jackson, a graduate of the exceptionally prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, grew up playing at the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, Florida. Throughout his musical career, he has been afforded many opportunities to study and be mentored by world-renowned artists including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terence Blanchard, Terri Lynn Carrington, Ralph Peterson, and Tia Fuller, among others. His deep commitment to musicality and his rare, authentic versatility as a player have made him one of the most in-demand musicians not only in Boston, but increasingly throughout the United States and beyond.
Jonathan Suazo (alto sax) was named one of the top ten emerging jazz artists of 2023 by the GRAMMYS and his debut album “Ricano” (Ropeadope Records) was listed at #6 in the best Jazz albums of 2023 by The New York Times. He has received many honors including the South Arts Jazz Road Tours Grant, the New Music USA Creator Fund Grant, and a full tuition Scholarship to attend the Berklee Global Jazz Institute masters program. His compelling combination of undeniably great time feel, masterful melodicism, and infectious energy have received glowing attention from Downbeat jazz magazine and The New York Times. Perhaps even more significantly, his playing has elicited substantial words of endorsement from established luminaries Miguel Zenón (who describes Suazo as "undoubtedly one of the most important Puerto Rican musicians of his generation") and David Sánchez ("one of the most talented and versatile young artists I've had the blessing to hear and teach in recent years.")
The trio will be releasing their self-titled EP on August 8th, 2024, coinciding with their Boston debut performance at the beloved Cambridge jazz venue The Mad Monkfish, and are currently booking 2024-2025 dates in the Northeast and Midwest US as well as in Europe.
